What is Manga?

Manga is a collaboration between man meaning whimsical and ga meaning pictures. Together they make Manga, a term commonly used to cover a wide range of comic books, and graphic novels created in Japan. Mangaka is the maker of Manga, and they are considered to be masters of illustration and storytelling.

The Difference Between Manga and Anime

While Anime is another term for all forms of animation published and created in Japan - these are common adaptations of manga series. Such as Dragon Ball Z, and Sailor Moon. That being said the only distinct difference between both is that Manga is print and Anime is animation art.

Basic Manga Genres

  • Yonkoma Manga - Also referred to as the 4-Koma, Yonkoma Manga consists of four panels that are vertically placed - showcasing an entire story from start to finish. Additionally, the Yonkoma manga commonly follows a Kishotenketsu story structure.

  • Gekiga Manga - A collaboration of dramatic drawings that come with cinematic quality. These commonly cover mature subjects such as the Lone Wolf and Cub. The manga came out in the 1700s and is still considered one of the finest Gekiga manga of all time.

  • Doujinshi Manga - These are non-professional and commonly self-published mangas. Dojinshi manga commonly covers fan comics and original works. Both are intense and offer a personal touch from the author and illustrator.
